Winter alert: Snowfall and rain to lash northern Pakistan

Published on: December 13, 2025 2:43 PM

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain and snowfall in northern and western regions. A new western weather system is entering the country, bringing precipitation and cold temperatures over the weekend.

Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, and Buner are expected to experience rain and mountain snowfall. Gilgit-Baltistan areas including Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, and Shigar may also see snowfall. Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Bagh, and Haveli in Azad Kashmir are likely to get rain and light mountain snow.

On December 14 and 15, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, and Waziristan may see partly cloudy weather with light rain. Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Sherani, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, and Qila Saifullah are also expected to experience rain and snowfall.

Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and the Potohar region may receive light drizzle on Sunday and Monday. Murree and Galiyat could see light rain or snowfall, while dense fog is likely in plains until December 16. Visibility may be affected in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh plains.

PMD warned that snowfall may block roads in Naran, Kaghan, Kalam, Malam Jabba, Chitral, Swat, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Quetta, and Ziarat. Landslides are possible in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply, and another western system may affect the country from December 19.
