5.7 magnitude earthquake shakes Islamabad and Chitral

Published on: December 19, 2025 2:08 PM

Parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Chitral, and Dir, experienced a 5.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday morning, according to the Seismological Centre. The tremor struck at around 10:39 am, with its epicenter located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan and a depth of 12 kilometers. Residents reported feeling strong shaking, prompting many to leave their homes in alarm.

Despite the intensity of the quake, initial reports indicate no casualties or significant damage. Many people were seen reciting Kalma-e-Tayyaba as they gathered outside their homes, a common practice during natural disasters. Authorities continue to monitor the affected areas to ensure public safety.

This earthquake follows an earlier tremor this week in Karachi, which measured 5.2 in magnitude and occurred at a similar depth of 12 kilometers. The Karachi earthquake struck at 12:51 am, with tremors felt across areas including SITE Area, Saddar, Clifton, DHA Phase 8, and PECHS. Residents in Liaquatabad and Shah Faisal Colony reported particularly strong shaking.

Seismologists note that the region remains seismically active due to its proximity to the tectonically sensitive Hindu Kush and northern Pakistan fault lines. While most quakes in this region are minor, occasional moderate-to-strong tremors can occur, reminding residents of the importance of preparedness.

Authorities are advising people to stay alert for potential aftershocks and to follow safety protocols, such as moving to open spaces and avoiding damaged structures. Emergency services remain on standby to respond to any incidents.

Pakistan has experienced a series of moderate earthquakes this month, highlighting the ongoing seismic activity in the country’s northern and western regions. Officials are urging communities to remain vigilant and take precautions to minimize risks during such natural events.
