Winter rains and snowfall grip Pakistan, temperatures plunge nationwide

Published on: December 21, 2025 12:29 PM

Winter rain and snowfall swept across large parts of the country, sharply lowering temperatures and marking a strong start to the cold season in several regions, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Swat, and Balochistan, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Quetta valley and multiple towns across Balochistan received their first significant winter rainfall, ending a long dry spell and providing much-needed relief to farmers struggling with drought-like conditions for months.

Rain was recorded in Pishin, Kalat, Ziarat, Mustung, and Zhob, while Azad Kashmir and the Neelum Valley also witnessed steady showers, helping ease water shortages and improve overall weather conditions across the region.

At the same time, snowfall was reported in Swat, Kalam, and Mahudand, drawing a large number of tourists to Kalam as fresh snow transformed the area into a winter attraction, boosting local tourism activity.

According to the Met Office, snowfall is expected to continue in mountainous areas while rain is likely in plains over the next two days, with snow already covering peaks around Muzaffarabad and nearby upper regions.

However, visibility declined in several cities due to increased humidity and dense fog, particularly in Karachi, where temperatures dropped to 17 degrees Celsius and air pollution levels rose sharply.
