KARACHI: A large fire broke out at a garment factory located in the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) of Landhi on Monday evening, once again raising concerns over industrial safety in the area.

Officials said the blaze erupted on the second floor of the Z.A. Enterprises building and quickly spread, producing thick plumes of smoke that were visible from a distance.

According to Rescue-1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan, emergency services received an alert about the fire at around 5:21pm. He said that since it was evening, factory workers had already left the premises, preventing any loss of life.

Firefighting teams rushed to the site and launched an extensive operation to contain the blaze. More than 15 fire tenders, along with two snorkel vehicles, were deployed to control the flames.

After several hours of effort, firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by approximately 8:50pm. Cooling operations continued late into the night to prevent any possible re-ignition.

Officials confirmed that this was the second major fire incident reported in the EPZ within the past three weeks. In the earlier incident, an entire factory building had collapsed following a fire, causing widespread concern among workers and business owners.

Rescue officials further revealed that this was the seventh fire reported in the Export Processing Zone over the past year. The repeated incidents have highlighted serious questions about fire safety measures, building standards and emergency preparedness in the industrial area.

Authorities said an investigation would be carried out to determine the cause of the latest fire and assess the extent of damage to the factory. However, no immediate estimates of losses were available.

Industrial safety experts and labour representatives have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in factories to prevent such incidents and protect workers and infrastructure in Karachi’s key industrial zones.
