Pakistan regains global spotlight in 2025: US magazine

Pakistan emerged as a renewed focus of global attention in 2025 after several years on the periphery of international strategic debates. According to an analysis highlighted by the US-based magazine The Diplomat, the year marked a strategic comeback driven by security, diplomacy, and regional developments.

A central theme of this shift was the Pakistani military leadership’s clear stance against extremism. Senior commanders reiterated that the authority to declare jihad rests solely with the state, sending a firm message that reinforced state writ and underlined a policy of zero tolerance toward militant narratives.

The armed forces’ role in strengthening internal order also drew attention. Observers noted that decisive leadership and a defined vision contributed to improved discipline and a more coherent national security posture, despite persistent internal and economic challenges.

Regional tensions with India in May 2025 further placed Pakistan under the international spotlight. Limited military clashes attracted global scrutiny, with analysts assessing the balance of power and the effectiveness of Pakistan’s response under constrained resources.

Pakistan’s performance during the confrontation was widely discussed among defence experts. The episode was seen as reinforcing deterrence credibility and demonstrating professional military capability, while also reshaping diplomatic dynamics, including renewed engagement with the United States.

Beyond South Asia, Pakistan expanded its defence and diplomatic footprint in the Middle East. A major defence cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia, alongside growing interest in Pakistani defence equipment, was described as a significant strategic development.

China reportedly expressed satisfaction with the battlefield performance of defence systems used during the crisis, while a more favourable global environment emerged for the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Pakistan also assumed a more visible role on issues ranging from Gaza to Afghanistan, pairing firm counterterrorism policies with regional diplomacy.

Despite economic pressures, analysts noted that reforms, including progress toward PIA’s privatisation, offered Pakistan a rare opportunity to translate improved global standing into longer-term stability.
