Azad Khan takes charge as new police chief of Karachi

Published on: January 2, 2026 2:10 PM

Karachi has a new police chief following a major reshuffle in the Sindh Police leadership, with senior officer Azad Khan appointed to head policing in the provincial capital. The development comes after the promotion of Javed Alam Odho to the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh.

Azad Khan, a Grade-21 officer, was serving as Additional IGP Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Sindh before being assigned his new role. He takes charge as the city’s police chief at a time when Karachi continues to face challenges related to crime control, traffic management and law enforcement reforms.

Javed Alam Odho, who was earlier holding the additional charge of IG Sindh, formally assumed office as the provincial police chief following the retirement of Ghulam Nabi Memon on December 31, 2025. His appointment was confirmed through an official notification issued by the Sindh chief secretary.

Upon his arrival at Karachi’s Central Police Office (CPO), IG Odho was presented with a salute by a special police contingent. He later held a meeting with senior police officers posted at the CPO to discuss priorities, administrative matters and policing challenges across the province.

The new IG Sindh also laid a floral wreath at the memorial of police martyrs and offered Fateha, paying tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Officials said the gesture reflected a commitment to honouring sacrifices made by the police force.

As part of the broader reshuffle, Zulfiqar Larik has been appointed Additional IGP Special Branch, while Sharjeel Kharl will serve as Additional IGP Police Operations Sindh. Iqbal Dara has been posted as Additional IGP Police Training Sindh.

In other postings, Faisal Abdullah Chachar has been appointed DIG Mirpurkhas, Nasser Aftab has been given additional charge as Director General Sukkur, and Pervez Chandio has been named DIG Establishment Sindh.

The new appointments are expected to shape policing priorities in Sindh, with officials emphasising improved law and order, operational efficiency and public service delivery.
