New York mayor wipes out predecessor’s orders

Published on: January 3, 2026 1:00 PM

New York’s newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani revoked all decisions made by the former mayor on his first day. He ordered the cancellation of actions approved after September 26, 2024. The move marked an immediate shift in city leadership.

Mamdani specifically overturned decisions taken by former mayor Eric Adams after that date. September 26, 2024, was when Adams was indicted on bribery and fraud charges. Officials said the timing played a key role in the decision.

The new mayor’s order covered a wide range of administrative and policy measures. Among them was the reversal of a definition of antisemitism for New York City. That definition had been approved by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

City sources said the rollback aimed to restore transparency and public trust. Mamdani signaled that decisions made under legal controversy required fresh review. Therefore, his action was framed as a corrective step.

The move drew strong attention across political and civic circles. Supporters praised the decision as decisive leadership. Meanwhile, critics said it could create administrative uncertainty.
