Khamenei backs protests, warns rioters

Published on: January 3, 2026 7:15 PM

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed the nation amid renewed demonstrations. He said protests are justified but rioters will face strict action. Khamenei drew a clear line between legitimate grievances and acts of violence.

Khamenei emphasized that authorities must engage with citizens who have complaints. “We talk to the protester; officials must talk to the protester,” he said. He added that rioters, who attack the system, will not be tolerated.

The leader condemned individuals claiming to represent Tehran’s Grand Bazaar shopkeepers who attacked Islam and the political system. He described such actions as attempts to undermine the state. Khamenei warned that these acts must be stopped immediately.

He struck a defiant tone toward foreign powers, saying Tehran will resist outside pressure. “We will not let the enemy force us to accept his policy,” he said. He vowed that Iran would confront external interference and bring adversaries to their knees.

Khamenei concluded by affirming dialogue with citizens while maintaining security measures. The government’s approach combines engagement with protesters and strict action against rioters. Protests continue in several Iranian cities.
