KP plans extension of BRT service to Jamrud and Bara

Published on: January 7, 2026 10:15 AM

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has initiated steps to extend the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to Jamrud and Bara tehsils of Khyber district. Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi has directed relevant authorities to complete all preparatory work for the project at the earliest.

The directive was issued during a meeting chaired by the chief minister to review progress on the proposed expansion. According to an official statement, the extension is expected to improve connectivity between Peshawar and Khyber district while offering residents a safe, reliable and affordable public transport option.

Mr Afridi said the expansion of the BRT network would significantly ease daily commuting for people travelling between the two areas. He added that the project would also help reduce traffic congestion and contribute to lowering environmental pollution in the region.

During the meeting, it was decided that a dedicated ramp would be constructed at the Karkhano station to facilitate the extended BRT service. The ramp is estimated to cost around Rs500 million and is aimed at ensuring smooth integration of the new routes into the existing system.

Officials briefed the chief minister on infrastructure needs, fleet expansion and operational arrangements for the Jamrud and Bara routes. They informed the meeting that 12 new 12-metre-long buses would be procured to begin operations on the extended sections.

According to the plan, eight bus stops will be established along a five-kilometre stretch from Karkhano Market to Jamrud Bazaar. In addition, 10 bus stops will be set up over a seven-kilometre stretch from Pishtakhara to Bara Bazaar to serve commuters in the area.

The meeting was told that the existing BRT system currently operates 18 routes covering a total distance of 132 kilometres. By June 2026, the government plans to induct 52 additional diesel-hybrid buses at a cost of Rs3.2 billion, along with 50 electric buses costing Rs6.2 billion, to further strengthen the fleet. Senior officials, including the chief secretary and heads of relevant departments, attended the meeting.
