Netflix sets release date for new ‘Narnia’ film adaptation

Published on: January 9, 2026 2:58 PM

Netflix has officially confirmed the release schedule for its upcoming adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Greta Gerwig. The project marks the start of a major reimagining of C.S. Lewis’ classic fantasy series.

According to Netflix’s updated 2026 film slate, the movie will receive a theatrical release in November before arriving on the streaming platform in December. The timing positions the film as a major holiday-season release, aligning with the franchise’s family-friendly appeal.

Gerwig’s adaptation will not revisit The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe — the story that launched Disney and Walden Media’s film series in 2005. Instead, the new adaptation begins with The Magician’s Nephew, the novel that explores Narnia’s creation, the origins of the White Witch, and the rise of Aslan’s magical world.

Although The Magician’s Nephew was published fifth in the seven-book series, C.S. Lewis later identified it as the chronological starting point of the saga. The shift signals Netflix’s intention to rebuild the narrative foundation of the franchise from the very beginning.

The film represents Gerwig’s first major project since Barbie, which became a global box office success and earned multiple Academy Award nominations. Industry analysts have pointed to Netflix’s Narnia reboot as one of the most closely watched fantasy productions of 2026.

Early casting reports list Emma Mackey as the White Witch, alongside Daniel Craig in a supporting role, with Meryl Streep voicing Aslan. The adaptation is expected to blend updated cinematic storytelling with the core spirit of Lewis’ original work.

A December streaming premiere also gives Netflix a strategic release window against other holiday-season blockbusters. While anticipation continues to build, the platform has not yet unveiled a trailer or further production details.
