Gmail integrates Gemini 3 AI with new summaries and drafting tools

Published on: January 9, 2026 5:01 PM

Google is merging its Gemini AI directly into Gmail, transforming the popular email platform into a “proactive inbox assistant” for its 3 billion users. The update, powered by the new Gemini 3 model, introduces tools for summarization, drafting, and prioritization to help users manage email overload more effectively.

One of the key features, “AI Overviews,” condenses long email threads into concise summaries, making it easier for users to quickly understand ongoing conversations. This feature is being made available to all Gmail users for free. Additionally, subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra can now search their inbox using natural language queries, such as, “Who gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation?”

Gemini 3 has a capability most people don’t even know exists.

it’s not the 1M tokens.
it’s not the multimodal processing.

it’s something else entirely.

And it’s the reason I built 3,000+ prompts specifically for Gemini 3.

Google is also enhancing its writing tools within Gmail. The “Help Me Write” feature assists in drafting or refining emails, while the updated “Suggested Replies” provides one-click responses tailored to the user’s style. Both of these tools are available at no cost. However, a new “Proofread” feature offering advanced grammar and tone checks is limited to paying subscribers.

The new “AI Inbox” feature delivers a personalized briefing by highlighting high-priority items, such as overdue bills, appointment reminders, and messages from VIP contacts. Currently, AI Inbox is being tested with a limited group of trusted users before a wider rollout.

The Gmail–Gemini 3 integration begins rolling out in the U.S. on Thursday for English-language users, with plans to expand to more regions and languages in the coming months. Google says the update aims to reduce email stress and make communication more efficient by leveraging the capabilities of Gemini 3 across its inbox tools.
