Punjab CM orders province-wide fire safety audit immediately

Published on: January 21, 2026 4:36 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a comprehensive province-wide audit of fire safety systems following the tragic blaze at Karachi’s Gul Plaza. She stated that the audit would cover public and private buildings to prevent future fire hazards and strengthen emergency preparedness. The move aims to ensure that every institution complies with safety standards and that risks related to electrical short circuits and flammable materials are minimized.

In her statement, the chief minister emphasized the development of new standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance fire safety protocols. She said inspections would include hospitals, schools, government offices, and private institutions to ensure proper safety systems are in place. Officials were directed to identify vulnerabilities quickly and take immediate corrective measures to safeguard citizens and property.

Maryam Nawaz highlighted that the initiative seeks to prevent disasters before they occur, stressing proactive measures over reactive responses. She urged all building owners to cooperate fully with inspectors and implement necessary safety equipment, including fire alarms, extinguishers, and emergency exits. The CM reiterated that negligence in fire safety could no longer be tolerated and would face strict accountability.

Meanwhile, the aftermath of the Gul Plaza fire continues to unfold as rescue teams work tirelessly to locate missing persons. The death toll has risen to 29, with three more bodies recently identified. Of these, 11 victims have been officially identified, while 17 bodies remain at the morgue pending DNA confirmation, highlighting the scale of the tragedy.

Authorities confirmed that 86 people are still missing, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations amid efforts to clear debris safely. The provincial government has coordinated with emergency services and local authorities to manage the situation, provide medical assistance, and support families affected by the disaster. The CM stressed that rapid response and proper coordination are critical in such emergencies.

Finally, Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public safety, stating that regular audits and stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations would be conducted throughout Punjab. She called for continuous monitoring, training of personnel, and public awareness campaigns to prevent similar tragedies and protect citizens’ lives and property.
