In the women’s draw, Aryna Sabalenka extended her unbeaten record in tiebreaks to 21, defeating Russia-born Anastasia Potapova 7-6(4), 7-6(7) in a tough encounter. The win sets up a fourth-round clash against Canadian Victoria Mboko, who upset 14th seed Clara Tauson 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 to reach the last 16 on her main-draw debut. Sabalenka admitted her focus in tiebreaks is critical: “You cannot lose focus for a second because it’s gone really quickly,” she said.

Other men’s highlights included Daniil Medvedev coming from two sets down to beat Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-7(5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3. Tommy Paul advanced smoothly after Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired with injury, while Alcaraz’s next challenge will be Paul. Third seed Alex Zverev faces British contender Cameron Norrie, and Australian hope Alex de Minaur meets Frances Tiafoe in the evening session at Rod Laver Arena.

On the women’s side, Coco Gauff recovered from losing her first set to defeat fellow American Hailey Baptiste 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, setting up a last-16 showdown with Muchova, who thrashed Magda Linette 6-1, 6-1. Yulia Putintseva ended Zeynep Sonmez’s inspired run in a tight three-set contest, bringing an end to Melbourne’s Turkish support.
