
The death toll from Karachi’s deadly Gul Plaza inferno has climbed to 71. Rescuers recovered more remains on Friday. Officials said search operations are now in final stages.
Authorities confirmed that victim identification is underway using DNA testing. So far, 16 bodies have been identified, including nine through DNA matches. Meanwhile, 49 samples were collected for further verification.

The massive fire broke out on the night of January 17 and burned for nearly two days. As a result, the ground-plus-three-storey shopping mall was gutted. Several sections collapsed due to intense heat.
Officials said 77 people were initially reported missing after the blaze. Therefore, rescue teams continued recovery under Sindh Building Control Authority supervision. Moreover, heavy machinery and modern equipment were used during operations.

Rescue officials stated that 10 to 15 percent of the building remains inaccessible. They believe the fire started in a flower shop and spread rapidly. Investigations into fire safety failures and negligence continue.
