Murad Ali Shah announces fast reconstruction for Gul Plaza

Published on: January 26, 2026 6:45 PM

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced that Gul Plaza victims will receive rebuilt shops within two months. He said each affected shopkeeper will also get 5 lakh rupees to manage household expenses temporarily. The government will provide a one-crore-rupee loan for reconstruction, with the interest paid by the Sindh government.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, Shah said the loss of life cannot be undone. Families of those who died will receive one crore rupees. The government will rebuild the Gul Plaza building in collaboration with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce. Damaged goods will also be replaced with the chamber’s support.

Shah added that until the new shops are ready, affected shopkeepers will continue receiving financial support. The new shops will match the size of the previous ones, and reconstruction work will be coordinated directly with the shop owners. Officials are already surveying the site to begin construction immediately.

The Chief Minister said the Gul Plaza tragedy case has been registered, and those responsible will face punishment. He admitted shortcomings by the government but stressed that safety audits will now be conducted for every building. Similar committees have been set up in other provinces to prevent such incidents.

Shah emphasized that there will be no compromise on safety. Buildings that fail audits will be sealed. He said the government is determined to ensure such disasters do not happen again. The reconstruction and support measures aim to restore livelihoods and infrastructure quickly.
