Bangladesh gears up for polls with army alert

Published on: January 26, 2026 9:30 PM

Bangladesh’s chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has ordered the armed forces to remain on high alert ahead of February elections. He emphasized that the upcoming referendum and parliamentary polls are crucial for the country’s democratic future. The military must assist the election commission while staying neutral and professional.

During a meeting at army headquarters, Yunus stressed the importance of a peaceful, free, and fair election environment. He said the armed forces play a key role in protecting public trust. Any failure to maintain order could undermine voters’ confidence and the legitimacy of the electoral process.

The chief adviser instructed the military to provide full support to both the election commission and local civil administration. He highlighted that the armed forces must act within legal limits. Professional responsibility and impartiality are essential, he added, to ensure smooth polling.

Yunus reminded officials that the referendum will allow citizens to express opinions on the state’s future. Meanwhile, the parliamentary elections on February 13 will let voters choose their representatives. He warned that any lapse by security forces could impact public confidence in the democratic process.

Authorities are now preparing for heightened security across the country. Military checkpoints and monitoring systems are likely to be active during polling. Citizens are urged to cooperate with the armed forces and election officials to ensure a safe, transparent election.
