Alhamra hosts literary evening honouring female writers

Published on: January 27, 2026 2:09 AM

The Lahore Arts Council Alhamra curated a refined and intellectually resonant literary evening dedicated to distinguished women prose writers, celebrating the strength, sensitivity and depth of contemporary Urdu prose.

The event featured eminent writers Neelum Ahmed Bashir, Sofia Baidar and Naveen Roma, whose literary contributions continue to shape modern narrative discourse. The proceedings were gracefully conducted by acclaimed writer Amna Mufti, whose articulate moderation added coherence and intellectual rhythm to the evening. Speakers highlighted that Pakistani women prose writers have attained global literary stature, with their work influencing not only academic and literary circles but also the wider reading public. It was noted that meaningful writing is ultimately an act of social responsibility, fostering awareness, empathy and intellectual awakening.

In his statement, Chairman of the Lahore Arts Council Alhamra, Razi Ahmed, said that women prose writers have expanded the intellectual horizons of Urdu literature by introducing narrative depth, emotional complexity and social consciousness. He emphasised that Alhamra remains committed to providing a dignified and visible platform to creative voices that reflect society with honesty and insight.

Executive Director of the Lahore Arts Council Alhamra, Muhammad Nawaz Gondal, stated that Alhamra will continue to organize literary and cultural engagements with consistency and vision. He remarked that evenings dedicated to women prose writers are not only a celebration of literature but also a meaningful step toward connecting younger generations with quality writing, critical thought, and cultural values.

During the discussion, Amna Mufti shared insights into her ongoing novel inspired by her grandmother’s life and read selected passages that left a deep impression on the audience. Her thoughtful analysis of prose writing, delivered with clarity and literary finesse, was widely appreciated. Sofia Baidar, while expressing her views, stressed that prose readings should be institutionalized in the same manner as poetry recitals to strengthen the direct bond between writer and reader. She presented her short story, which was met with enthusiastic applause, reaffirming her significant contribution to contemporary Urdu prose.

The audience also responded warmly to the stories presented by Neelum Ahmed Bashir, who observed that the presence of listeners eager to engage with fiction was proof that the short story remains a living and powerful literary form. Her work reflected intellectual maturity, thematic depth and refined craftsmanship. Naveen Roma further enriched the evening by presenting her evocative and impactful short stories, adding a distinctive literary dimension to the gathering and reinforcing the diversity of narrative voices. At the conclusion, speakers and participants unanimously acknowledged that Alhamra’s initiative to host literary evenings featuring women prose writers is a visionary and commendable effort that strengthens literary traditions, nurtures creative dialogue and reinforces Alhamra’s role as a leading cultural and intellectual institution in Pakistan.
