Pakistan-India clash hangs in balance as ICC waits

Published on: February 9, 2026 3:59 PM

A final decision regarding the much-anticipated Pakistan versus India match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is expected to be announced on February 12, according to informed sources. The uncertainty has kept cricket fans across both countries on edge, as the fixture remains one of the most watched and commercially significant matches in world cricket.

Earlier, the International Cricket Council had reportedly given Pakistan a deadline of February 9 to clarify its position on participating in the match. However, no major progress has been made so far, and officials suggest that meaningful developments are unlikely before the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to brief him on recent negotiations and seek direction on the next steps. The meeting is seen as critical, as the government’s stance will directly shape Pakistan’s participation in the high-profile fixture.

Sources confirmed that the final authority rests with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who will decide whether Pakistan should play against India or maintain its current position. This makes the issue not just a sporting matter, but also one with political and diplomatic implications.

In the meantime, talks involving the ICC, Pakistan Cricket Board, and Bangladesh Cricket Board concluded late last night, focusing on Pakistan’s possible boycott and regional cricket concerns. These discussions aimed to explore solutions that balance sporting commitments with national policy considerations.

It is also notable that an ICC delegation recently visited Lahore to formally request Pakistan’s participation in the match. Previously, following government instructions, the PCB had agreed to play in the T20 World Cup but opted out of facing India, creating a situation that now awaits a decisive outcome.
