ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has directed all public and private universities in Pakistan to introduce a mandatory three-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs, starting from the Fall 2026 session.

In a letter to vice chancellors and heads of universities, HEC’s Executive Director emphasized that AI education is no longer optional but a critical necessity in today’s rapidly evolving global landscape. “Students must be equipped with digital literacy, ethical responsibility, awareness of data privacy, and an understanding of AI’s societal impact,” the letter stated, highlighting the need to meet international academic standards.
The directive allows universities flexibility in structuring the course. Institutions may offer AI as an elective, an interdisciplinary subject, or a supporting course within existing programs. The curriculum must cover foundational AI concepts, applications across diverse fields, ethical considerations, fairness, and accountability. Universities are also permitted to adapt the content to suit the nature of specific academic programs, ensuring relevance across disciplines.
The move comes amid growing recognition of AI’s transformative role in sectors including education, healthcare, governance, and the economy. By incorporating AI literacy into degree programs, HEC aims to prepare graduates for the increasing demand for skilled professionals capable of navigating technological challenges and leveraging AI responsibly.
Education experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that early exposure to AI concepts can help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ethical awareness, which are essential for participation in a digital economy.
