Punjab on high alert as Maryam Nawaz strengthens security measures

Published on: March 2, 2026 3:14 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered enhanced surveillance and intensified combing operations across the province amid heightened security concerns. She chaired a high-level law and order meeting where officials briefed her on the overall security situation and emerging threats. The chief minister emphasized that all departments must remain vigilant to prevent any untoward incident and ensure public safety.

Authorities have been instructed to maintain strict monitoring of individuals listed under the Fourth Schedule, along with other active security elements. Special attention is being given to red zones, sensitive installations, and crowded public areas. Police and district administrations have been ordered to remain alert, while additional personnel have been deployed at major markets, shopping malls, and other key commercial centers to strengthen security measures.

In view of potential terrorism risks and public order threats, Section 144 has been imposed across Punjab until March 7. This prohibits public gatherings of four or more persons and restricts the display of weapons. The chief minister also directed that entry and exit points be closely monitored and checked to prevent infiltration or movement of suspicious individuals across the province.

Maryam Nawaz stressed the need for immediate response mechanisms to counter any emergencies or threats. Officials reported that search and combing operations in sensitive areas would be intensified, and legal action would be taken against individuals sharing content that could undermine national security on social media platforms. Surveillance has also been enhanced in all key locations across the province.

The meeting also addressed the repatriation of illegally residing foreign nationals, ongoing protest demonstrations, and other security-related steps. So far, 32,729 illegal foreign residents, including Afghan nationals, have been deported, with 346 individuals currently held at provincial holding points. Deportations include 12,356 men, 6,673 women, and 13,700 children, demonstrating the government’s focus on maintaining law and order.

The high-level briefing was attended by Chief Secretary Zahid Zaman, Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi, Additional IG Special Branch, CTD officials, and other relevant authorities. Officials confirmed that Punjab remains on high alert, with continuous monitoring, direct surveillance of sensitive areas, and strict enforcement of security protocols to safeguard the public.
