EU pushes diplomacy to ease Middle East tensions

Published on: March 3, 2026 11:15 PM

The European Union vowed to continue all diplomatic efforts to reduce Middle East tensions, following escalating conflict in the region. EU officials said prolonged war would harm all countries, and dialogue remains essential to prevent further casualties. Tehran’s recent retaliatory strikes on Israel and Gulf states heighten the urgency for international mediation.

EU Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said Brussels maintains close contact with regional partners and global allies, working to de-escalate the crisis. Senior European representatives have recently engaged in outreach to encourage restraint, aiming to prevent further military escalation.

El Anouni stressed the EU’s commitment to regional stability, saying efforts are also focused on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The bloc continues coordination with the United States, both bilaterally and within G7 mechanisms, to ensure unified diplomatic pressure on Tehran.

The tensions rose sharply after U.S. and Israeli airstrikes killed nearly 800 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on Israel and Gulf countries hosting U.S. assets, raising global concern over the widening conflict.

The EU urged Tehran to adopt genuine behavioral change and emphasized diplomacy over further military escalation. Officials reiterated that all parties must prioritize regional security and engage in meaningful negotiations.
