Germany urges preservation of Iran’s territorial integrity

Published on: March 6, 2026 11:21 PM

MUNICH: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday urged Iran’s territorial integrity be preserved amid the ongoing Israel-U.S. conflict. He warned that collapse of Iranian statehood or proxy wars on its soil would threaten regional stability and Europe’s security.

Speaking in Munich, Merz said Germany is working with partners to form a common stance to end the fighting. He emphasized Iran must remain functional, with public order, basic services maintained, and its economy protected. Uncontrolled migration from Iran should also be prevented.

Merz added that sanctions could be lifted and aid provided if Iran meets necessary conditions. He stressed Germany’s diplomatic efforts aim to prevent escalation and protect civilians. Maintaining Iran’s institutions is crucial to regional and global stability. Officials are exploring humanitarian support while ensuring conflict containment.

The chancellor warned that instability in Iran could have far-reaching consequences for Europe, including economic disruption and refugee flows. Germany continues dialogue with partners to balance pressure on Tehran with measures preventing total collapse. Coordination with international allies is key to avoid further destruction.
