WhatsApp may launch a premium “Plus” subscription

Published on: March 9, 2026 1:33 PM

WhatsApp appears ready to follow the subscription trend sweeping the tech world. According to a recent discovery by WABetaInfo, the messaging giant is developing a premium tier, tentatively called WhatsApp Plus, which will offer a range of enhanced features for power users.

Among the highlights, WhatsApp Plus is expected to allow up to 20 pinned chats, a significant increase from the current limit of three. Subscribers may also gain access to 14 new app icons, multiple accent colors, and customizable themes, along with exclusive stickers, ringtones, and more immersive message reactions. These additions aim to provide a more personalized messaging experience for frequent users.

Despite these upgrades, WhatsApp will remain free for general users. The Plus tier will be optional, letting those who desire extra features choose to subscribe. This strategy follows WhatsApp’s early days when the app initially required a small fee before transitioning to a fully free model.

The move reflects Meta’s ongoing search for monetization methods on the platform. Unlike Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp’s private messaging model limits ad placements, making traditional advertising less effective. A subscription model could attract users willing to pay for added convenience and personalization.

Meta already offers a Meta Verified subscription for $15 per month, mainly targeting businesses to help protect their brand and engage customers. WhatsApp Plus, however, is aimed at individual consumers, offering features designed for frequent and active users.

Pricing details for WhatsApp Plus have not yet been revealed, but more information is expected as the official launch approaches. With subscription-based services becoming the norm across apps and platforms, WhatsApp Plus may mark a significant shift in how millions of users engage with the world’s most popular messaging service.
