Qatar seeks stronger security ties with US

Published on: March 10, 2026 9:32 PM

Qatar said it wants to strengthen its defence partnership with the United States after Iranian strikes targeted its territory. The attacks came during a wider regional conflict triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran. The development highlights growing security concerns across the Gulf region.

A spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry said existing defence agreements with the United States remain vital. However, Doha believes security arrangements should be strengthened to prevent further escalation. Officials stressed that partnerships with Western allies remain a key deterrent against future attacks.

Iran launched missile and drone strikes on several Gulf countries after joint US and Israeli attacks killed senior Iranian leaders. The conflict disrupted energy production across the region and pushed global oil prices higher. Regional governments have since increased security measures amid fears of wider escalation.

Qatar hosts the largest US military facility in the Middle East, the Al Udeid Air Base. The base was reportedly targeted during the conflict that erupted on February 28. Officials said the presence of American forces remains central to regional security arrangements.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said deterrence remains essential despite the recent escalation. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump previously pledged to treat any attack on Qatar as a threat to American security. Iran has also warned it could target US assets in the region if tensions escalate further.
