Turkish president condemns attacks on civilians, schools, and hospitals in Gaza

Published on: March 16, 2026 12:00 PM

ISTANBUL — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has strongly criticized the targeting of schools, hospitals, and civilians in Gaza, warning that similar attacks could extend to Iran and Lebanon. Speaking at an Iftar dinner at Istanbul University, Erdoğan called the attacks a manifestation of a “bloodthirsty network” and emphasized Turkey’s commitment to human rights, diplomacy, and dialogue in addressing regional crises.

Addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the Turkish president highlighted the extreme violence faced by ordinary citizens. “The world has witnessed scenes where human life holds no value, and civilians, including children in nurseries and school-going children, have been bombed,” he said. He condemned the deliberate targeting of medical personnel, stating that nearly 1,700 doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers were killed as a result of what he termed Israel’s state terrorism.

Erdoğan reiterated that Turkey’s stance on regional conflicts is guided by justice and human values rather than geographic or economic interests. “Our position is based on humanitarian principles. We evaluate events not in terms of oil, gold, natural gas, or mineral resources but through the lens of justice, compassion, mercy, and human dignity,” he said.

The Turkish president emphasized the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in resolving regional crises. He described Turkey as a defender of rationality and humanitarianism amid the escalating violence in the Middle East.

His remarks come amid growing international concern over civilian casualties in ongoing conflicts across Gaza and broader regional tensions. Erdoğan’s speech underscores Turkey’s commitment to advocating for humanitarian protections and holding parties accountable for violations of international law.

The president’s statements also signal Ankara’s intention to remain actively involved in mediation efforts while emphasizing human rights as the guiding principle for foreign policy in conflict zones.
