Pakistan praises Kazakhstan constitutional referendum

Published on: March 17, 2026 10:01 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the success of Kazakhstan’s constitutional referendum during a telephone call. He praised the high voter turnout and expressed confidence in the reforms strengthening governance and national development. The leaders also discussed regional issues, including Afghanistan, and bilateral cooperation.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz highlighted that the referendum reflected the Kazakh people’s trust in Tokayev’s vision. He said the reforms would enhance institutional stability and promote long-term progress. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties between Pakistan and Kazakhstan.

Recalling Tokayev’s visit to Pakistan last month, Shehbaz assured him that follow-ups on previously signed agreements were underway. He noted that meetings would soon finalise MoUs and partnerships across sectors, including trade, technology, and climate cooperation. The Kazakh president also invited the prime minister for an official visit later this year, which was accepted.

The conversation also focused on regional stability, particularly Afghanistan. Both leaders stressed promoting dialogue, cooperation, and connectivity for shared prosperity. Shehbaz extended warm Eidul Fitr greetings to Tokayev and the people of Kazakhstan, wishing them peace, progress, and continued development.

Last month, during Tokayev’s Pakistan visit, more than 30 MoUs were signed, targeting $1 billion in bilateral trade within a year. Agreements included cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital development, virtual assets, veterinary services, and climate change, strengthening technical and economic ties.
