Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed that all ongoing drainage and sewerage projects across 15 major cities of the province be completed before June and ordered round-the-clock work to ensure timely completion ahead of monsoon season.
Chairing a special meeting here on Sunday, the chief minister emphasized urgent completion of sewerage lines and rainwater drainage systems to avoid urban flooding during monsoon rains. She instructed that all projects must maintain fast-track execution with strict monitoring at every level.
The drainage projects were underway in Sargodha, Dera Ghazi Khan, Gujrat, Okara, Jhang, Multan and Sialkot, while similar work was also in progress in Jhelum, Hafizabad, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib and Rawalpindi.
According to the plan, 2,265 kilometers of sewerage lines and 189 kilometers of storm water drainage pipelines would be laid across the 15 cities.
In the first phase, 86 disposal stations and nine underground storage tanks would be constructed to strengthen drainage capacity. Upon completion of the projects, 752 kilometers of roads would also be reconstructed under the development scheme.
The meeting also approved the design of WASA complexes for all 15 cities. The complexes will include residential hostels for officers to improve administrative efficiency and operational support.
The chief minister directed real-time monitoring of all ongoing schemes through a WASA dashboard and mobile application, ensuring transparency and timely progress tracking.
She also instructed WASA Punjab to launch a large-scale desilting campaign of drains before the monsoon season to ensure smooth rainwater flow and effective drainage management.
