Russia escalates Ukraine ceasefire dispute amid child detention row

Published on: April 17, 2026 6:25 PM

Russia has criticized Ukraine over alleged violations of an Easter ceasefire, while also raising concern about the reported detention of a Russian child in Mexico. Moreover, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova made the statements, claiming that Ukrainian forces breached the truce thousands of times. As a result, tensions have further increased between Moscow and Kyiv amid ongoing conflict-related disputes.

Zakharova alleged that Ukraine failed to properly observe the Easter ceasefire announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was in effect from April 11 to 12. In addition, she claimed that Ukrainian forces violated the truce more than 6,000 times during the short ceasefire period. Consequently, Russia accused Kyiv of showing a lack of genuine commitment to peace efforts. These claims have added fresh strain to already fragile diplomatic conditions.

Furthermore, she stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not issue clear instructions to enforce the ceasefire on the ground. As a result, Russian officials interpreted this as evidence of weak coordination and limited intent to uphold the truce. In addition, Moscow continues to argue that such actions undermine international peace initiatives. The accusations have intensified political rhetoric between both sides.

Meanwhile, Russia also raised a separate diplomatic issue involving the alleged detention of a Russian minor in Mexico. Moreover, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Mexican Ambassador Eduardo Villegas Mejías in Moscow to express concern over the case. Consequently, officials demanded immediate consular access and the return of the child, identified as Kristina Romanova. This development has expanded the scope of Russia’s recent diplomatic complaints.

Zakharova further stated that the child is currently under the custody of Mexican child welfare authorities in a closed institution. In addition, she claimed the minor has repeatedly expressed a desire to return to Russia, while Moscow has monitored the case since 2023. As a result, Russian officials say they remain in close contact with child rights representatives and government agencies. The situation has added another layer of international sensitivity to the dispute.

Overall, Moscow says it will continue efforts to protect its citizens while addressing both regional conflict concerns and consular cases abroad. Moreover, Russian officials emphasize that such incidents require urgent diplomatic engagement and resolution. Consequently, both the ceasefire dispute and the child custody case remain under close international attention. The developments reflect ongoing tensions in multiple diplomatic arenas.
