Azerbaijan offers LNG supply as Pakistan energy crisis deepens

Published on: April 21, 2026 6:52 PM

Azerbaijan has said it is ready to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan as the country faces rising energy shortages linked to ongoing geopolitical disruptions. The state energy company SOCAR stated that it can begin deliveries as soon as Pakistan submits an official request through its designated gas procurement body.

According to SOCAR, a framework agreement signed in 2025 between Socar Trading and Pakistan LNG Limited allows Pakistan to directly purchase LNG cargoes through an accelerated process. The arrangement is designed to support faster energy procurement during periods of supply disruption and market instability.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is actively seeking spot LNG cargoes to manage its widening energy shortfall caused by reduced imports and external supply constraints. Officials say the country’s reliance on imported gas has increased vulnerability to global price fluctuations and shipping disruptions.

Earlier, authorities confirmed that imports of four LNG cargoes from QatarEnergy were halted due to renewed instability in the Strait of Hormuz, which plays a critical role in global energy transportation. The suspension has further strained Pakistan’s already tight gas supply situation.

Additionally, Pakistan State Oil and the Petroleum Division have been coordinating efforts to secure stranded LNG shipments, while also exploring alternative arrangements with Qatar once conditions stabilize. Officials noted that some loaded vessels remain stuck due to force majeure declarations linked to regional conflict risks.

Overall, energy authorities estimate that Pakistan requires around 400 million cubic feet per day of additional gas for electricity generation to avoid load-shedding. The government is now focusing on emergency imports and international partnerships to stabilize supply and reduce pressure on the national grid.
