Iran slams US over vessel seizure

Published on: April 22, 2026 4:45 PM

Iran has condemned the United States for seizing an Iranian commercial vessel in the Sea of Oman, calling the move an act of piracy. The Iranian envoy to the United Nations urged the Security Council to hold Washington accountable. The dispute escalates tensions and raises concerns over maritime security and international law.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council president, Iran’s ambassador Saeed Iravani described the incident as unlawful. He said US forces targeted the vessel “Toska” using coercion and intimidation. Furthermore, he claimed the crew and their families were placed at serious risk during the operation.

Iran argued that the seizure violates international law and breaches a ceasefire agreement reached earlier this month. The letter cited UN Resolution 3314, saying the act qualifies as aggression under international definitions. Consequently, Tehran urged the UN to formally condemn the incident.

The Iranian envoy warned that the operation could escalate regional tensions and threaten key maritime routes. He said such actions endanger global shipping stability and energy trade flows. Iran also demanded the immediate release of the vessel, its crew, and all affected individuals.

The letter requested formal circulation at the Security Council as an official document. Meanwhile, Iran continues to accuse the US of escalating conflict in the region amid broader geopolitical tensions. The situation remains part of wider disputes affecting Gulf security and international diplomacy.
