The film is based on the real-life case of Shah Bano Begum, a landmark legal battle in India during the 1980s involving maintenance rights for Muslim women after divorce. The story explores broader themes of women’s rights, justice, and social change.
Verma explained that Gautam was required to understand not only the narrative but also the religious and linguistic nuances relevant to her character. He noted that she studied Quranic Arabic and related interpretations to better grasp the cultural and legal framework depicted in the film.
The director said the intention behind the film was to address widespread misinformation and misinterpretations about Islam and its legal traditions. He emphasized that the project aimed to present a balanced and informed perspective, particularly in an era where online misinformation is widespread.
Verma also reflected on the broader social message of the film, stating that issues faced by women in the 1970s remain relevant today. He highlighted that challenges such as inequality and systemic bias continue to persist across societies.
According to him, the response to early discussions around the film has been highly positive, with audiences showing strong emotional connection to the subject matter. He described the reaction as unexpectedly widespread and impactful.
