Azma lauds PA speaker for passage of Child Marriage Restraint Act

Published on: April 30, 2026 9:12 AM

Provincial Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari has paid rich tribute to Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan for his dynamic and courageous leadership in steering the passage of the Child Marriage Restraint Act in the Punjab Assembly.

Speaking during the assembly session, the minister praised the Speaker’s statesmanship in handling this sensitive legislation. She noted that his balanced and inclusive approach has earned appreciation from all segments of society, including women’s organizations, intellectuals, and social leaders.

Azma Bokhari emphasized that as representatives of the people, it is their fundamental responsibility to protect the rights of vulnerable groups-especially underage girls who are often subjected to forced marriages due to social pressures. “We are all parents of daughters, and safeguarding their future is our collective duty,” she said. She described the approval of the Child Marriage Act as a historic milestone that will yield positive societal change and send a clear message against child marriages.

Highlighting the spirit of democracy, the minister appreciated members who expressed dissent, stating that difference of opinion is the beauty of democracy. She assured that the government would continue dialogue with those who have reservations to build consensus on this critical issue.

On the occasion, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan thanked the minister and remarked that he had merely fulfilled his responsibility. He commended the quality of debate during the bill’s passage and stated that bold decisions are essential for setting the right direction for society. He reiterated that the will of the majority in the House remains paramount, reflecting the true spirit of democracy.
