Federal govt blocks gas to KP CNG

Published on: April 30, 2026 5:40 PM

The federal government has declined to provide gas to CNG stations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing a nationwide shortage. The decision is expected to affect fuel availability and increase difficulties for consumers in the province. Energy supply constraints remain a key challenge across Pakistan.

According to sources, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Advisor Muzammil Aslam contacted Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik regarding the issue. Following the discussion, the provincial government was informed of the federal decision. Officials said the matter was communicated directly to the chief minister.

Muzammil Aslam raised concerns over the impact of CNG shutdowns on the public. He said the suspension of gas supply is causing serious difficulties for commuters and transport operators. As a result, pressure is mounting on alternative fuel sources.

The Petroleum Minister reportedly said that Pakistan is currently facing a severe gas shortage. He added that additional supply may only be considered after the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Therefore, immediate restoration of supply to CNG stations is unlikely.

Energy officials maintain that gas allocation is being managed under existing supply constraints. Meanwhile, provinces continue to seek relief for transport and industrial users. The situation reflects ongoing challenges in balancing domestic demand and limited resources.
