Kate Hudson reveals why she rejected Devil Wears Prada role

Published on: May 1, 2026 6:51 PM

Hollywood actor Kate Hudson has revealed that she nearly starred in the iconic film The Devil Wears Prada, but scheduling conflicts ultimately stopped her from taking the role. Her comments have sparked renewed interest in one of Hollywood’s most talked-about casting decisions.

The 2006 fashion drama The Devil Wears Prada originally considered Hudson for the lead role of Andy Sachs, which later went to Anne Hathaway. Hudson explained that she did not intentionally reject the project, but conflicting commitments made it impossible to proceed at the time.

Speaking in an interview, Hudson said multiple scheduling issues created uncertainty during negotiations, leading her to step away from the project. She clarified that the decision was not a creative rejection, but rather a practical outcome of overlapping professional obligations.

She also reflected on the missed opportunity to work alongside veteran actor Meryl Streep, who played the iconic role of Miranda Priestly. Hudson admitted that she sometimes wonders about the alternate path her career could have taken if timing had worked in her favor.

However, she praised Anne Hathaway’s performance, stating that she fully embraced the role and delivered an outstanding portrayal that defined the character for audiences worldwide. Hudson added that Hathaway “shines like a bright star,” acknowledging the success of the final casting choice.

Meanwhile, the franchise has continued to gain attention, with The Devil Wears Prada 2 recently premiering in New York City. The sequel brought back original cast members, further cementing the film’s legacy as a defining Hollywood fashion drama.
