Pakistan issues tender for two LNG cargoes

Pakistan issues tender for LNG cargoes to meet winter demand

Pakistan has issued spot purchase tenders for two liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes for May as the country seeks to maintain fuel supplies for power generation and energy demand.

According to sources in the Petroleum Division, Pakistan LNG Limited has invited bids from international suppliers for the purchase of two LNG cargoes.

Interested global companies have been asked to submit their bids by May 7, with the offers scheduled to be opened on the same day.

Sources said the first LNG cargo is expected to be delivered between May 12 and 14, while the second cargo is planned for delivery from May 24 to 26.

The tender comes as Pakistan continues efforts to stabilise energy supplies after facing recent power management challenges linked to fuel shortages.

Earlier, Federal Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Leghari had said the country had successfully received LNG supplies, helping authorities end electricity load management measures introduced in recent days.

Leghari stated that some consumers had experienced temporary power load management due to supply constraints, but the arrival of LNG shipments had helped improve the situation.

Pakistan frequently turns to the spot market for LNG purchases to meet short-term domestic demand, particularly during periods of higher electricity consumption or fluctuations in long-term supply contracts.

The latest procurement effort is seen as part of broader government measures to ensure uninterrupted gas availability for power plants and industrial users.

Energy analysts note that timely LNG imports remain critical for Pakistan’s energy mix, as the country relies heavily on imported fuel to support electricity generation, especially during peak demand periods.

Pakistan has faced recurring challenges in securing affordable LNG cargoes in recent years due to volatile global energy prices and competition from other importers.

The new tenders are expected to attract interest from multiple international energy suppliers, with final pricing and contract awards likely to be determined after bids are reviewed later this week.
