Fast & Furious expands with new television series announcement

Published on: May 12, 2026 4:00 PM

A television series based on the blockbuster Fast & Furious franchise is officially being developed for the Peacock streaming platform, marking a major expansion of one of Hollywood’s most successful action franchises. The announcement was made during NBCUniversal’s presentation to advertisers at Radio City Music Hall, where fans received fresh details about the future of the long-running series.

Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto in the films, confirmed that the franchise would continue on television alongside several other upcoming projects. During the event, Diesel revealed that four television shows were currently in development. However, an official NBCUniversal statement released later mentioned only one Fast & Furious television series, leaving fans curious about the studio’s broader expansion plans.

Meanwhile, Diesel reflected on his early concerns regarding sequels to the original 2001 film, admitting he once feared repeated follow-ups could damage its legacy. He explained that he worried the story of street racers and underground car culture might never achieve classic status if the franchise expanded too aggressively. However, the actor said the overwhelming global response from audiences eventually changed his perspective completely.

The franchise will receive another major milestone this week as the Cannes Film Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special midnight screening. Diesel is expected to attend the event alongside several co-stars from the films. Since its debut in 2001, the Fast & Furious franchise has released 11 films and generated more than $7 billion at the global box office, making it one of the highest-earning action franchises in cinema history.

In addition, the franchise continues expanding beyond movies and television through theme park attractions and entertainment projects. A new Fast & Furious roller coaster is scheduled to open at Universal Studios Hollywood this summer, while another attraction is planned for Universal’s Orlando theme parks. NBCUniversal executives believe longtime fans want more stories centered on legacy characters, emotional connections and the franchise’s famous family-driven storyline.

Diesel also praised Donna Langley for helping guide the project toward television development. He said he waited until the right leadership was in place before agreeing to expand the franchise onto the small screen. According to Diesel, protecting the integrity of the characters, global appeal and emotional family themes remained essential before moving forward with a television adaptation. The final Fast & Furious film is currently scheduled for release on March 17, 2028.
