Shakira secured a major legal victory in Spain after the country’s High Court cleared her in a long-running tax fraud case linked to the 2011 tax year. The ruling ended an eight-year legal dispute and ordered Spanish authorities to return more than 60 million euros, including accumulated interest. The decision marks a significant moment for the internationally famous singer after years of courtroom battles and intense media attention.
The case began after Spanish tax officials argued that Shakira should have been considered a tax resident in Spain because of her relationship with former football star Gerard Piqué. Authorities claimed the singer spent enough time in the country during 2011 to fall under Spanish tax laws and become liable for local taxation. However, the court later concluded officials failed to provide sufficient evidence supporting that claim.

Under Spanish law, a person must remain in the country for more than 183 days within a calendar year to qualify as a tax resident. Court documents revealed that authorities were only able to confirm Shakira’s presence in Spain for 163 days during 2011, falling short of the legal requirement. Judges ultimately ruled that the evidence presented by tax investigators did not justify the accusations against the singer.
Meanwhile, Shakira’s legal team described the lengthy case as emotionally exhausting and damaging for both her personal life and public image. Her lawyer, Jose Luis Prada, said the singer experienced years of pressure while facing constant media scrutiny and legal uncertainty surrounding the allegations.
