Hajj begins amid rising Middle East tensions

Published on: May 25, 2026 3:30 PM

More than 1.5 million Muslims gathered in Makkah on Monday as the annual Hajj pilgrimage officially began. The pilgrimage unfolded amid growing uncertainty over tensions involving Iran and the Gulf region. Pilgrims from across the world arrived to perform sacred rituals despite fears surrounding regional security and extreme heat.

Pilgrims entered the vast tent city of Mina after completing the “tawaf” around the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque. Worshippers walked seven times around Islam’s holiest site before continuing prayers and rituals. They also performed the traditional walk between the hills of Safa and Marwa. Saudi authorities confirmed international pilgrim arrivals surpassed last year’s numbers despite regional instability.

Meanwhile, concerns over Middle East tensions continued to shape global attention during the pilgrimage. US President Donald Trump signalled uncertainty over extending a ceasefire involving Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian attacks previously targeted sites in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring Gulf countries. However, Saudi officials stressed their commitment to maintaining security during one of the world’s largest annual gatherings.

Saudi authorities also increased visible security preparations around the holy sites. A defence ministry video showed advanced air defence systems positioned near Makkah to protect pilgrims from aerial threats. Officials said the measures aimed to ensure safety and peace throughout the pilgrimage. Many worshippers expressed hope for peace while focusing on the spiritual significance of Hajj.

The pilgrimage will continue with the key gathering at Mount Arafat on Tuesday, where Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) delivered his final sermon. Pilgrims are expected to endure temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius during the week. Despite the harsh conditions, worshippers remained emotional and grateful to fulfil a lifelong religious obligation.
