Pakistan records second warmest year in 65 years

Published on: June 12, 2026 8:33 AM

Pakistan recorded its second warmest year on record in 2025, with the national annual mean temperature reaching 23.9°C, which was 1.09°C above the long-term average, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26. The survey stated that 2025 ranked as the second warmest year during the past 65 years. Temperature anomalies were particularly pronounced in northern regions, with Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recording their highest annual temperatures in 65 years. The report noted that Pakistan’s annual mean temperature has increased by approximately 0.5°C over the past 50 years, while projections indicate a further rise of 3°C to 5°C by the end of the century. Meanwhile, the country also received 288.5 millimetres of rainfall in 2025, about three percent below the long-term average of 297.6 millimetres. The survey said rainfall distribution remained uneven across regions. Sindh, Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan recorded above-average rainfall, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan remained below average. The monsoon season from July to September recorded rainfall 23 percent above average, while the year started with significantly below-average rainfall during the January-March period.
