Ukraine launched its largest drone attack in years on Moscow, striking an oil refinery and disrupting commercial air traffic. The assault triggered fires across parts of the capital and forced temporary closures at major airports. The escalation highlights intensifying cross-border strikes in the ongoing war.
Authorities said several drones reached the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district. Fires broke out at the facility, sending thick black smoke into the air. Residents reported a strong smell as flames burned throughout the morning.
The attack also forced the evacuation and temporary shutdown of Moscow’s main airports, including Sheremetyevo. Officials said hundreds of flights were delayed as airspace restrictions were imposed. Nearby streets were also closed due to security concerns.
Russian officials claimed around 180 drones were intercepted near Moscow and more than 500 nationwide. They also reported damage from debris, including fires near residential and commercial buildings. Emergency services responded to multiple incidents across the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strikes as justified responses to Russian attacks. The escalation comes as diplomatic efforts remain stalled and both sides continue long-range drone warfare. Analysts say energy infrastructure remains a key target in the conflict.
