Lindsey Graham remembered for decades of service and leadership

Published on: July 12, 2026 1:43 PM

US Senator Lindsey Graham has passed away at the age of 71 after suffering what his office described as a brief and sudden illness. He died on Saturday evening, and his office confirmed the news early Sunday while requesting privacy for his family during this difficult time. His passing marks the end of a long political career that significantly influenced American defence, foreign policy and national politics.

President Donald Trump was among the first national leaders to pay tribute, describing Graham as one of the greatest senators and a true American patriot. In a message shared on Truth Social, Trump praised Graham’s dedication to public service, saying he worked tirelessly for his country and would be deeply missed by colleagues, supporters and the American people.

Moreover, Lindsey Graham represented South Carolina in the US Senate for more than two decades after winning election in 2002 and taking office in 2003. Throughout his career, he became one of the Republican Party’s most influential voices on defence, national security, judicial appointments and foreign affairs, shaping key policy debates in Washington.

At the time of his passing, Graham was serving as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and had already launched his campaign for a fifth six-year Senate term. Reports indicated that emergency responders rushed to his Capitol Hill residence after receiving a cardiac arrest call, but despite immediate medical efforts, doctors could not revive him.

Furthermore, Graham remained one of Donald Trump’s closest allies in the Senate during recent years, playing a prominent role in advancing Republican priorities and supporting major legislative and foreign policy initiatives. His long record of public service, political influence and commitment to national security leaves behind a lasting legacy that will continue to shape discussions on American leadership and governance.
