According to international media reports, the blaze erupted suddenly at the orphanage and spread rapidly through the building, trapping several occupants inside. Emergency responders, firefighters and local residents rushed to the scene to battle the flames and rescue those caught in the fire.

Officials confirmed that 11 people lost their lives in the incident, while at least 19 others sustained injuries of varying severity. Rescue teams managed to evacuate several residents from the building, including five people with disabilities, who were brought to safety during the operation.

Authorities said 10 of the injured suffered severe burn injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Medical teams remain on high alert as they continue to provide care to those injured in the tragedy.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Algerian authorities have launched an investigation to establish how the blaze started and whether any safety lapses contributed to the incident. Officials are expected to examine the orphanage’s fire safety measures as part of the inquiry.

The incident has sparked grief across the country, with many expressing condolences to the families of the victims and calling for stronger safety standards in residential care facilities.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured and assured that the authorities would provide all necessary support to those affected.
