IHC restricts Aamir Liaquat from appearing on TV

Published on: December 13, 2017 5:34 PM

Lahore: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has restricted television host Aamir Liaquat Hussain from making any television appearance.

The IHC’s Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui passed the interim order of barring Aamir from appearing on TV till further orders. He was hearing a petition filed against the TV host by citizen Muhammad Abbas on Wednesday.

The decision came a day after Aamir announced to join a private news television channel 24 News.

I would like to announce that I have joined Channel 24 as President Network. Soon you will see my programs from @24NewsHD Need prayers 🙂 #AamirLiaquat

Accusing Aamir of spreading discord and hatred in the country, the petition sought a complete ban on him from using print media, television and social media.

The petitioner’s counsel, Barrister Shoaib Razaq, argued that Aamir did not have any Islamic degree, yet he called himself an “Alim”.

He also accused the TV host of creating social and religious divide in the country through his shows.

After hearing the arguments, the court issued notices to the federal government, the Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (PEMRA), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Aamir Liaquat to file their responses.

The court was then adjourned till January 10, 2018.
