Jahangir Tareen’s son to contest for NA-154 seat

Published on: December 28, 2017 5:47 PM

LAHORE: Ali Tareen, the son of disqualified legislator Jahangir Tareen submitted his nomination papers to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday to contest for NA-154 seat in the by-poll.

The seat was left vacant following Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) former general secretary Jahangir Tareen’s disqualification by the Supreme Court (SC). Tareen was disqualified on the basis of Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution and and Section 99 of Representation of People Act (ROPA) for not disclosing his property abroad. Following the judgement, Tareen also resigned from his post as the general secretary.

In a political rally on Wednesday, the former parliamentarian nominated his son for NA-154 seat and said that despite his disqualification he would stand by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and would continue to serve the people. Following his speech, Ali Tareen also addressed the people. He told them that he would try his best to live up to their expectations and would raise his voice in the favour of the farmers if he were elected to the National Assembly (NA).

According to the schedule released by ECP, NA-154 by-poll will be held on February 12. ECP started accepting the nomination papers on December 26 and will release the list of selected candidates on January 16, 2018. The elections symbols will be allotted on January 18, 2018.
