Pakistan’s biggest #MeToo moment: Meesha Shafi accuses Ali Zafar of sexual harassment

Published on: April 19, 2018 8:23 PM

In the wake of sexual harassment incidents and echoes from the #MeToo campaign voicing concerns from all around the world, Pakistani singer, Meesha Shafi has just taken to a post on Twitter and made a shocking revelation to accuse Pakistani sensation Ali Zafar of sexual harassment.

Sharing this because I believe that by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. It is not easy to speak out.. but it is harder to stay silent. My conscience will not allow it anymore #MeToo pic.twitter.com/iwex7e1NLZ

— Meesha Shafi (@itsmeeshashafi) April 19, 2018

Meesha posted a long note revealing the details of her harassment that has now gone viral. Narrating her ordeal, the singer said, “I have been subjected, on more than one occasion, to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar. These incidences didn’t happen when I was young, or just entering the industry. This happened to me despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind! This happened to me as a mother of two children.”

The 36-year-old mother of two shared her #MeToo story with an upsetting message: “If this can happen to someone like me, an established artist, then it can happen to any young woman hoping to break into the industry and that concerns me gravely.”

In response to this, the Twitter brigade has a lot to say about the recent disclosure by Meesha Shafi:

Teefa is seriously in trouble Guys 😨😨😨😨#TeefaInTrouble pic.twitter.com/Oa6Cw8Ruq9

It’s funny how such things to go one other extreme in Pakistan for starters we don’t even know what ali zafar did. It could have been something inappropriate but is it big enough to splatter it all over Twitter?

— Faisal Amjad (@FaisalAmjad1) April 19, 2018

There s something not so right (read convincing) here. She s too bold a person to let it happen firstly; and do nothing to counter the act secondly. I think both of em must ve been doped outa their minds wen it happened. Nothing abnormal in their class, btw

Thank you for sharing this story Meesha. It’s very brave of you!

Ye dunya jhoti log lutere

— Mubashir Hussain (@sheromalik) April 19, 2018

Any proof of that? How can you expect us to believe that #AliZafar harassed you? Only you were left in the music 🎶 industry to be harassed? Many beautiful girls 👧 out there? 😕👀 #MeeshaShafi #MeToo

— Mohammad Ali Khan (@AliKhan9107) April 19, 2018

A friend who works in the industry just messaged me saying “Thank god someone finally spoke up about it” — seems @AliZafarsays predatory behaviour is known to many – well done @itsmeeshashafi

Ali Zafar started his career as a singer and a music composer and achieved initial success on Pakistani television. He made his Bollywood debut with “Tere Bin Laden” and was later seen in movies like “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan”, “London Paris New York”, “Kill Dil” and “Dear Zindagi”.
