Macron calls Trump after NYPD blocks his motorcade in NYC

Published on: September 23, 2025 6:10 PM

New York: A rare diplomatic moment turned into a viral spectacle when French President Emmanuel Macron’s motorcade was halted by the New York Police Department (NYPD) in Manhattan. The incident occurred as U.S. President Donald Trump’s movement froze city traffic, forcing Macron to briefly step out of his vehicle.

Despite Macron’s security and official status, NYPD officers refused to let his convoy pass, citing the U.S. President’s scheduled route. Macron, appearing both amused and slightly frustrated, asked officers, “If you don’t see the motorcade, let me pass.” But when that failed, he pulled out his phone and called Trump directly.

In a light-hearted exchange caught on camera, Macron said, “Hey, how are you? Guess what, I am waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you, ha!” The moment quickly went viral, with social media users praising the French President’s humor in the face of a bureaucratic hiccup.

Interestingly, the exchange came just after France officially recognized the State of Palestine at the 80th UN General Assembly — a bold diplomatic move that may have added underlying tension to Macron’s visit. However, his casual call to Trump helped diffuse any awkwardness in real-time.

Online reactions were mixed. Some applauded Macron’s calm and comic approach, calling it “a reminder that world leaders face delays too.” Others used the incident to critique the U.S., with one user posting, “America only flexes on allies. If it were Putin, they’d roll out the red carpet.”
