Brown University gunman found dead In New Hampshire

Published on: December 19, 2025 9:15 PM

Authorities confirmed that Claudio Neves Valente, the suspect in last weekend’s Brown University shooting, has been found dead, ending a multi-state manhunt following a deadly campus rampage and subsequent killings.

Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former Brown Ph.D. student in physics, reportedly acted alone and took his own life. Officials said his motive for targeting the university remains unknown.

Investigators believe Valente also killed MIT professor Nuno Loureiro two days after the Brown shooting. Loureiro, a faculty member in nuclear science, physics, and the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, was found fatally shot in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Providence police and Rhode Island authorities said a tip from someone who confronted Valente on campus led to his rented car and eventually the storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, where his body was discovered.

Two students were killed and at least eight others were wounded during the Brown University attack, which occurred in a classroom building lacking surveillance cameras, forcing investigators to rely on nearby residential footage.

Officials confirmed that Valente was familiar with the building and had attended Brown more than 20 years ago. While authorities continue to investigate the connection to MIT, details of his motive have yet to be determined.
