Rs 53m athletics stadium being built at javelin maestro’s home village

Published on: January 7, 2026 12:56 AM

Around 60 per cent work has been completed on the athletics stadium being built at Chak 101/15-L in Main Channu, the home village of Olympic Gold Medallist Arshad Nadeem, to fulfill a promise Punjab government had made after the national hero had brought home the Javelin Olympic crown.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had announced the construction of a sports stadium in Chak No 101/15-L, the native village of Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem, who made history by winning gold with a record-breaking javelin throw at the Olympic Games. For this purpose, the Punjab government released a special grant of Rs 50 million through the Sports department.

According to District Sports Officer Muhammad Hafeez, 60 percent of the construction work on the seven-acre sports stadium has been completed. He said that major components including the boundary wall, jogging track, and open gym have already been completed, while a turbine stands installed to ensure irrigation of the stadium.

He further stated that grass development and plantation work would be initiated soon after the installation of the electricity connection at the stadium, being built at a cost Rs 52.973 million. The project is expected to complete by June 2027.

Meanwhile, Olympic hero Muhammad Arshad Nadeem recently called on Deputy Commissioner Khanewal Maliha Rasheed at her office Monday last and invited her to visit the under-construction sports stadium at his village. The deputy commissioner accepted the invitation and promised an early visit.

Speaking on the occasion, the deputy commissioner said that in line with the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the district administration was taking all possible measures to promote sports activities across the district. She emphasized that the revival of sports grounds would help nurture talented athletes, enabling them to bring glory to the country at national and international levels.
