Shehbaz hails US Iran breakthrough talks

Published on: June 23, 2026 9:41 PM

Shehbaz Sharif

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday welcomed the recent US-Iran talks, calling them a breakthrough for regional peace and stability. He said the diplomatic progress marked a historic moment with potential benefits beyond the two countries. The remarks matter as Pakistan positions itself as a facilitator in regional diplomacy.

Addressing the National Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif said the negotiations between the United States and Iran had achieved significant technical progress. He described the talks as a positive development that could reduce tensions across the region. He added that structured dialogue was essential for long-term stability.

The prime minister said Pakistan had played a constructive role in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran. He stated that the Memorandum of Understanding reached through diplomatic engagement was an important step forward. According to him, the agreement could help rebuild trust between the two sides.

Shehbaz Sharif further said the next 60 days would be crucial in shaping a comprehensive peace agreement. He noted that working groups on sanctions, nuclear issues, economic development, and implementation would guide the process. He expressed hope that continued negotiations would lead to a lasting settlement.

Meanwhile, the prime minister also briefly addressed domestic politics during his speech. He criticised opposition claims regarding legitimacy and election disputes. He said national focus should remain on unity and international diplomatic progress rather than political division.
