German foreign minister lands in Kyiv to strengthen Ukraine’s defense

Published on: June 30, 2025 3:34 PM

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Kyiv on Monday for high-level talks focused on strengthening Germany’s support for Ukraine amid escalating Russian attacks. The German Foreign Ministry said Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to helping Ukraine defend itself with modern air defense systems, advanced weapons, and vital humanitarian and economic aid.

The visit follows a massive Russian assault on Sunday, involving hundreds of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles targeting Ukrainian cities and military infrastructure.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy called on Washington and Western allies to urgently bolster Ukraine’s air defense to counter the growing threat from Russian aerial strikes.

Germany is currently the second-largest military backer of Ukraine after the United States, providing crucial weaponry and financial aid. However, recent doubts about Washington’s future commitments have increased pressure on European nations to deepen their support. Wadephul’s visit signals Berlin’s intention to play a stronger role in Ukraine’s defense amid the ongoing conflict.

Separately, Russian officials claim their air defense forces destroyed 15 Ukrainian drones overnight, highlighting the intensifying aerial warfare between the two countries.
